Memphis neighborhoods
Originally home to the Chickasaw Nation, Memphis has been a city of great joy, success, and sorrow. The Native Americans faced removal from their home as far back as the 1540's when explorer, Hernando DeSoto claimed Memphis for Spain.
After a nearly 300 year fight between the Spaniards, who originally claimed Memphis, and marked this by taking over a French Fort, that was later constructed, making it Fort San Fernando, and the French, who claimed the entire Mississippi Valley from St Louis, Missouri, down to New Orleans, LA, Memphis became property of the United States in 1797.
It would be nearly 20 years until the incorporation of the city. By that time, the Chickasaw Nation had officially surrendered the land to America.
The men who originally solicited the land that is now Memphis, included future president Andrew Jackson. They named the area Memphis after the capital of Ancient Egypt.
Memphis is such a successful city due in large part to the access to many other regions, thanks to the Mississippi River and the Memphis & Charleston railroad, and the fact that cotton grew plentifully throughout the entire area that surrounds Memphis.
The city can also attribute its success to music. It is not only the home of Blues, which started along the infamous Beale Street, it is also a major center for Rock and Roll, is home of Graceland, Country Music, and Soul.
Memphis has had its hardships. In the late 1800's two yellow fever epidemics left thousands dead, and drained the cities resources. The port businesses were the only thing that helped rebuild the city.
In the 1960's as the civil rights debate grew riots, fires, and other debauchery split the city apart, making it nearly inhabitable.
In the 1970's the city officials took charge. Over the next 30 years the city rebuilt itself, and today is one of the largest tourist areas in Tennessee and the South.
Downtown is booming with businesses and residential property. Life for Memphis residents is good as the city continues to grow into a truly attractive Southern city.
