The District is a mix of the old and the new. Some residents were born in the neighborhood and continue to live here. In recent years, the Central Gardens District has also attracted new residents that have found the area the perfect place to live in the Greater Memphis area. The district has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The beautifully well-manicured lawns, and tree-lined streets make the neighborhood one of the most sought after areas to move. Homes are spacious and the pricing is moderate for the size of the lots. The Central Garden District dates back to the early 1900's when 1600 acres of land were taken, by a prominent family in the area, and sold. Between the turn of the century and the early 1930's the neighborhood was booming. The Central Garden District was the newest, and most prestigious place to live in Memphis. After WWII development slowed, as new areas bloomed, but the area once again grew in the 1960's as more and more began to appreciate the professional, well maintained neighborhood. The Central Gardens Historic Committee makes sure the neighborhood keeps its level of prestige. The council talks about maintaining safety, planning neighborhood activities, and ways to improve the area, keeping the streets as beautifully as they were when Central Gardens was first established. |
