Brownsville, Tennessee. Brownsville was designated the county seat of Haywood County on October 16, 1824. It was named for General Jacob Jennings Brown of Pennsylvania who was a hero in the War of 1812. Brownsville was growing and prospering until disaster struck in 1878 with the yellow fever epidemic. Despite such hard times Brownsville managed to move on.
Today, Brownsville is a clean well-kept city of 15,064 citizens. The early settlers of this city recovered from disaster and moved forward. Since then, this well-planned city with its beautiful churches and homes continues to grow a little more each year. The citizens could not be happier.
